The Salvation Army Junior Hockey League is a hockey league for young people 4 to 15 years of age run by the Salvation Army in Central York Region. The purpose of the league is to provide a positive hockey experience for young people in a Christian environment. There are currently 3 divisions in operation (Tyke, Novice and Junior) encompassing 10 teams and approximately 150 players.
The league plays out of the Tom Graham Arena at Richmond Green in Richmond Hill. Games are held once per week on Saturday mornings between 6:45am and 11:45am. The Tyke division is for beginners and younger age players (ages 4 to 6) looking for an introduction to hockey skills with 55 minute on-ice skills development sessions. The Novice division incorporates a mix of practice time and games each week. The Junior division plays full games once each week. This focus on games is consistent with the focus of the league on having fun where players of all skill levels can participate in game play. Players looking for more focus on skill development should consider other house leagues that offer regular practice time or supplemental skills in development programs. The league uses a fair ice time policy where players are on the ice at least once every 3 shifts during games.
Coaches are volunteers who give of their time each week to lead the teams. They are required to coach the teams in a manner consistent with Christian principles. There is an annual Awards Event at the end of the season where individual and team trophies are distributed. The Salvation Army reserves a number of league spots for sponsored children who would otherwise be unable to participate in the league. This sponsorship pays for hockey equipment and the league registration fees.
